Spider-Man Brand New Day – Trailer Analysis

Written by:

Hey everybody! I’m sure by now, we’ve all seen the long anticipated Spider-Man Brand New Day trailer, but if you haven’t, I’ll link it below:

Alright, now that you’ve had time to check it out, I’m sure you’re as hyped as I am! It’s been too long since my boy has been in action, and it’s only a few months away!

In honor of the event, I wanted to break down the trailer, and also talk about the easter eggs and references found in it, so let’s get right into it!

Trailer Breakdown

In this section, I want to point out some of the fun story developments and details I enjoy, and that I think will make this movie fun:

  • First of all, the trailer description points out that four years have passed since the end of No Way Home. Our boy has been alone and forgotten for that long – how sad…
  • The suit is so comic-accurate, and the way it ripples in the wind is so sweet!
  • Not only is the suit accurate, but Peter is too – he’s sad, broke, and lonely, but determined to do the right thing and help people no matter what! That’s my GOAT!
  • We can see he kept the note from the end of No Way Home which he was going to give to MJ – more sadness…
  • We can see Fisk’s assistant from Daredevil: Born Again giving him the key to the city – we know there’s going to be some connection to the show in this movie, so that’s interesting…
  • Love the dynamic with the Punisher – the fact they know each other already and have a fun back and forth is great!
  • He’s getting organic webbing and mutating, which could lead to something crazy I’ll get into in another section!
  • It’s awesome to see Bruce Banner again!
  • We still don’t know anything “really” about Sadie Sink’s character!
  • Awesome to finally see Scorpion, and have Michael Mando get his time to shine!
  • Love seeing all the lesser know villains, really makes it feel like a comic – characters like Tarantula, Boomerang, and we know Tombstone will be in it!

This is all in the first trailer, and we all know Marvel loves hiding things – so there will most certainly be surprises in the full movie too!

Easter Eggs and References

This next section is where I go full super fan! For those of you who don’t know, an “easter egg” is a pop culture term referring to a reference in an adaptation to its source material, and as you can imagine, in comic book movies, this happens a lot.

Here I want to point out the fun references for the hardcore Spidey fanatics (like me):

First of all, let’s talk things directly from the comics, which is in the quick successions of shots near the end of the trailer:

#1 – Amazing Fantasy #15

Spider-Man Brand New Day
Amazing Fantasy (1962) #15 | Comic Issues | Marvel

This shot is a direct homage to the first ever Spider-Man comic, released in 1962 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

#2 – Amazing Spider-Man #345

Spider-Man Brand New Day
The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #345 | Comic Issues | Marvel

This shot is a reference to a famous issue featuring Boomerang, released in 1991 by David Michelinie and Erik Larsen.

#3 – Amazing Spider-Man #134

Spider-Man Brand New Day
The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #134 | Comic Issues | Marvel

This shot is like a direct recreation of this cover for Amazing Spider-Man #134, released in 1974, by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru.

Next, let’s talk about fun comic connections that aren’t so direct:

#1 – The Punisher

Spider-Man Brand New Day
The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #129 | Comic Issues | Marvel

Fun fact: The Punisher made his first appearance in a Spider-Man comic, so it’s cool to have him here in his first film appearance! He first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #129, released in 1974 by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru.

#2 – The Hand

Spider-Man Brand New Day
Hand Members, Enemies, Powers | Marvel

The Hand, for those who don’t know, are a group of ninjas that are primarily Daredevil villains, though they also fight Spidey and the Punisher, and the other street level heroes. The group already appeared in the original Daredevil show…

Theories

Now, I want to talk about my potential theories for the movie, based on plotlines I think they’re going to adapt:

#1 – The Other/Man-Spider

Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Completely Rewrites Tom Holland's Peter Parker
I really want to see this in Marvel's Spider man 3. I know it sounds crazy but I think this would be interesting part of the story. : r/SpidermanPS4

One of the major aspects of the story that we see in the trailer is Peter mutating, and his powers seem to be changing – he’s got organic webbing, and we can see his eyes changing here from a person’s to spider-like eyes.

It seems they’re adapting part of a story called “The Other” (one of the few stories I haven’t read, but I’ll get to it). I can’t say the full details on how, but this has also happened in other stories as well, such as Amazing Spider-Man #100, released in 1971, by Stan Lee and Gil Kane.

In that story, Peter was trying to get rid of his powers, but the experiment messed up, resulting in him growing six arms like a spider. (Comics, am I right?).

Amazing Spider-Man #100 (September, 1971) | Attack of the 50 Year Old Comic Books

This story was adapted in the 90’s show, Spider-Man: The Animated Series as well, as seen in the image above, below the eyes.

They’ll most likely pick and choose elements from these various stories, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

#2 – Hulk going Rogue

Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk is such a fitting Spider-Man character : r/marvelstudios

It’s great to see Bruce Banner again, and that he seems to have found some stability, becoming a professor at ESU. Of course, because this is Marvel, I have high suspicions this won’t last, and Hulk will be going rogue again. Cue Spidey vs. Hulk fight!

That inhibitor device Bruce wears, which he mentioned previously in She-Hulk, will most likely be the cause of this, and the villain will be involved.

#3 – Street Level Marvel

Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Begins Releasing Trailer in Tiny Pieces - AOL

In a smaller moment in the trailer, we can see Spider-Man receiving the key to the city for his service to New York. It seems innocuous, until you realize that the woman giving him the key is the assistant to Wilson Fisk (current mayor), Sheila Rivera.

What does this mean – we know that there’s some connection to Daredevil: Born Again, and this movie takes place after that, and we also now know that the Punisher’s special will come out immediately after season 2 of Daredevil, and before this movie.

All of this leads me to believe there is some interesting storylines brewing in the world of the street-level MCU, and I wouldn’t be surprised if something bigger comes out of this.

Conclusion

This might be my most anticipated movie of the year, and this is a stacked year for movies! I can’t wait to see where Peter’s journey in the MCU goes next, but what about you?

What did you think of the trailer? Are you excited, nervous, or somewhere in between? Do you have your own fan theories or ideas for what’s coming?

Let me know by emailing me or commenting on this post. I hope you enjoyed guys, and I’ll see you in the next one. Take care 🙂
